About Us
The Fort St. John Literacy Society is a non-profit organization which has been dedicated to promoting literacy for all individuals and groups throughout Fort St. John and the local region since 1990. The vision of the Society is to see literacy rates in our community improve: almost 25% of the population between the ages of 18 and 35 have not completed high school, and over 35% of working-age people do not have the literacy skills they need to achieve their goals in the modern economy. Literacy programs can have a significant impact, bettering the economic, social and civic life of our citizens.
Society programs include classes and individual one-to-one tutoring. Adult learners may either bring course or work-related material they want to study, or the Program Coordinator can set out a curriculum to help them meet their individual literacy goals, such as improving reading comprehension. The Society helps an average of 60 adult learners each year through family literacy classes, one-to-one tutoring, and ESL programs. We have approximately 30 trained volunteer tutors.
We also launched the following programs in 2019:
- Financial Literacy workshops
- Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library book program
- After School Homework Help Program
- One on one tutoring spots specifically for youth
