Contestants young and old took to the stage at Margaret ‘Ma’ Murray Community School on April 13 for the Fort St. John Literacy Society’s second annual Spelling Bee.

The event raised $4,397 to support the society’s after school homework club. The top fundraiser was Cooper Haggstrom, who raised $740.

The Fort St. John Literacy Society is excited to announce that the recent New Year’s Eve fundraising party raised $16, 500!! All of these funds will help expand and enhance the FREE literacy programming that is offered to the community.

“This event was made possible because of sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who attended; all of which we are extremely thankful for” says Jessica Kalman, Executive Director for the FSJ Literacy Society. Title sponsors for this event included: Pomeroy Hotel & Conference Centre, Just Jacks, 101.5 The Bear, Peace SunFM, CJDC-TV and 890 CJDC.  As well as many door prize sponsors including VE Brandl who donated $500 as the final door prize. “We are already planning and looking forward to next year’s event” added Kalman

The Fort St. John Literacy Society in partnership with the North Peace Cultural Society; is thrilled to announce the launch of a peer to peer after school homework help program.

This program aims to provide homework tutoring to students needing a little extra help outside of school hours. We also recognize that many learning processes have changed over the years, and welcome parents to participate as well, so they may continue to be a resource to their children at home.

Peer to peer tutoring will be taking place at the North Peace Cultural Centre on Monday and Wednesdays from 4-5:30 pm starting Monday November 26^th.  To register as a learner, please call 250-785-2110 or email tmills@fsjliteracy.ca to ensure a tutor in the subject needed is available.

“We are so excited to be able to offer this service, and thankful to all of the volunteer tutors that have already signed up to help out!” said Jessica Kalman, Executive Director. Based on the current tutors available, this program will be providing homework help for students in grades 3-9; with a plan of expanding up to grade 12 over the coming months. “We are always actively seeking tutors for our various programs and encourage anyone who is interested in helping out to contact us as well” added Kalman.

With November being Financial Literacy month; the Fort St. John Literacy Society is thrilled to re-launch their financial literacy program thanks to a recent donation of $3,100 from North Peace Savings & Credit Union.

Throughout the month, Canadians are encouraged to invest in their financial well-being. This means taking control of their financials and reducing stress by making a budget, having a savings and debt reduction plan, and understanding their financial rights and responsibilities.

The Fort St. John Literacy Society plans to offer Financial Literacy workshops starting November 21^st, with the plan to host one-two workshops monthly. “We are extremely thankful for the recent donation from North Peace Savings & Credit Union, which has allowed us continue offering FREE financial literacy workshops to the community” said Jessica Kalman, Executive Director, Fort St. John Literacy Society.

The Fort St. John Literacy Society is excited to announce the launch of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Fort St. John and the surrounding communities, thanks to generous donations from BC Hydro and Pembina Pipeline.

This program aims to make a lasting change in the lives of children, and to give every child in the community an equal chance for a brighter future through not only the development of literacy skills, but by strengthening family bonds through the sharing of the stories. Children between the ages 0-5 in our area are eligible to receive a book a month until their 5^th birthday, giving the potential of a 60 book library by the time they are 5.
